The pathway

Choosing the best way to train

There are a number of factors you will want to consider when looking to become a driving instructor.  These are the most common factors you will have to consider. FaceUp can help steer you down the best pathway.

The beginning

It is advisable initially to check the DVSA website, CHECK IF YOU CAN BECOME A DRIVING INSTRUCTOR.  There is a short survey to assess your suitability on here in addition to some general information about the steps you will need to take to qualify.  You will need to apply for your DBS (disclosure) check to confirm you have no outstanding criminal record and you will need to sign the ADI (approved driving instructors) guide to declare you've read the requirements.

Part one (the theory test)

You will need to apply to complete the 'P1', the theory test. More details about how to sit this and pass can be found on the DVSA website.  FaceUp can advise best guides or apps to qualify for this.

Part two (the driving test)

FaceUp believe many candidates fall down at this point because pupils have an unrealistic view of their driving skills, bad habits have crept in, or driving practices have changed over the years.  FaceUp will provide a free one hour consultation with a debrief upon where the trainee needs to improve their driving.  Subsequently, lessons can be purchased to work on needs identified in this area.

Part three (the instructional ability test)

To qualify to become a driving instructor you will need to pass the Part 3.  Details can be found about how to pass the test on the DVSA website.  After passing P2 you have two choices: Apply for a 'pink badge' and train in an approved driving school car or sit the test when you feel you have had sufficient training.

FaceUp can help supply or source the training you will need. The advantage of using FaceUp for training is you only pay as-you-go, meaning you can fit the training in within your timeframe (though it should be pointed out there are time restrictions governed by the DVSA about how quickly training needs to be completed, however FaceUp still gives you greater flexibility).   If you venture down the pink badge route you will need to have completed 40 hours of relevant training before you can apply for this.  If accepted by the DVSA and a pink badge is issued you can then provide lessons (and charge) which is helping you gain experience towards passing the qualification.  FaceUp can assist with providing the vehicle - If you are wishing to commence on the pink badge on a part time basis we will supply a vehicle on an as-you-need basis so you aren't paying huge weekly fees for a vehicle you are only using for a fraction of the cost.
